 "Great Product" 2006-12-01
By Nicole Martinez (San Antonio)
The original Venus razor came out around 5 years ago and it was a smash success. Since it's debut, the people at Gillette have brought us several other incarnations of their Venus razor, including the Divine.

Originally the Venus was a multi-blade razor with moisture strips (which fade to indicate a less than optimal shave) and an ergonomic handle. I'm not sure what the Divine adds to the experience, really. The handles are exactly the same, which actually is a nice thing because you can use any Venus replacement razor with any handle (if you don't mind that the colours don't match) and that means you can save money by not having to be an entirely new razor but you'll probably want to.

I find that the plastic handle makes this razor feel like something I'd rather throw it away and, after storing it in the shower, I should because the plastic seems to be a magnet for all sorts of gunk that won't easily wash off of the small and intricate parts of this razor.

The moisture strips are an improvement over the original Venus, however. I honestly haven't noticed that they fade as an indication of blade usage but I have noticed they don't have the tendency the "break off" like the moisture strip of the original design did. I believe there's also an extra moisture strip which never hurts but, let's face it, the moisture strips on razors are no replacement for shave gel although Venus moisture strips are far superior to that of its leading competitor, the Schick Quattro for Women.

Another character of this razor is both positive and negative: it's holder. I like razor holders because otherwise razors like this tend to have their moisture strips melt and stick to the tub or wherever you store this. Initially a razor holder which sticks to your shower wall and holds your replacement blades seems like a good idea but, like the razor, this shoddy plastic container collects a lot of gunk.

Additionally, the holder is quite bulky which does not work in its favour as the cheap foam tape which is supposed to stick well and be removable isn't really the best idea. For a while I kept my razor on its holder sitting on my tub rather than sticking to my shower wall but I have since tossed the holder, and keep my razor alone in the shower. Were this holder to work however, it would be wonderful because, unlike the Quattro, the replacement blades are completely covered and can be kept in the shower without any damage.

Aside from that, the Venus Divine does accomplish a shave worthy of any goddess. Time after time I am no less than amazed at the great shave I get from my Venus Divine - though I'm not so sure it's any better than the shave I got with the original. My legs and underarms feel smooth and great and shaving itself is almost never irritating though the Quattro seems to nick my skin less.

Perhaps it's the extra blade of the Quattro but I prefer not to use this razor around my bikini line and area. The shave just isn't as close and the area becomes more irritated afterword.

The price of this razor and its blades can be daunting but I've only ever had to use one razor (handle) since it first came out and these blades seems to stay sharper longer than those of the Quattro. Even a duller Venus Divine blade works pretty well.

Though Gillete boasts that the curved blade head won't irritate skin, I find it a little bulky in tighter, curvier areas. Also, the placement of the button (top, center of the handle) is where I find I want to place my thumb while shaving which I cannot do, obviously, or the head will pop off but the placement of these buttons are pretty universal on razors.

The bottom line: great shave for some areas, quality blades a little costly, and the holder is greatly overrated.

An excellent product -- been using it now for a couple of years. Very well designed for easy grip and light touch, and I have never cut myself using it. Also changing blade cartridges is very easy, even in the shower. Would recommend to anyone very highly.
