The Mach 3 in 2001 became my new razor after the regular Sensor. However, even a great shave comes at a great price..... the expense was too much-wow. I wondered just how different the Mach 3 was to its prior bud, the Excel. No difference. Really.

It did just as good of a job. And at a cheaper price, I have decided to stay with the Sensor.
Caution: If you have sensitive skin, please use something unscented or non-foamy (shaving cream). My face dried out using this with the 'cheap' foam Gilette stuff. Use a gel.

This razor gave a nice, smooth shave with good handling. Because of the rubber grip on the sides, it didn't slip or cut. My wife used it also, and said it worked great on her legs. I'll no longer use my Schick Tracer FX, because I really liked the Gillette Sensor Excel.

I got this razor for my husband and I don't think it left much of a lasting impression. He used it, but when he went on a business trip he packed his usual disposable razors. He said it gave a nice, smooth shave, but he'd only buy it if the price was comparable to the disposables. I received 4 packs of 5-each blades, rather than the advertised 2 packs of 10-each. This is not so much of a problem as the fact that one 5-pack was manufactured in Brazil for the Brazilian market (no English on the package), and one of the blades in that pack is a Sensor 3, identified on the front of the box as "Experimente". I find this kind of substitution irritating, as the effort to return the order is not justified, and DAB Nutrition is probably counting on that.

I couldn't agree more with Paul Thomas "thepablo." Like him, I've tried all kinds of razors, inluding Gillette's newer designs, such as the Fusion. For me, the soft rubber "rumble strip" that Gillette adds to these newer models just gets in the way and prevents me from getting as close a shave as I get with the good old Sensor. Another problem with the Gillette Fusion is the location of the pivot point between the handle and the cartridge; it's just plain awkward. That, coupled with the ribbed rubber strip, creates major shaving frustration. In any case, Gillette makes the best blades, at least for thick barbed wire beards like mine. Schick blades are garbage by comparison. They seem dull even when they're brand new, which leaves me a nicked-up, bloody mess. Gillette, I beg you, please don't stop making my tried-and-true Sensor blades!!!

I have been shaving my head for about a dozen years now. When I started, I just used the same blades I was using on my face: Gillette Sensor. Every once in a while, I try something new. Perhaps it's in my christmas stocking. Maybe it's on super sale. Maybe it's all I can find at Costco. Regardless, they have all been failed experiments and I must go back to the plain, old Sensor.



Sensor Excel. Quattro. Mach 3. I have tried many things. What do all of these (and many more) have in common? They all have the little rumble strip before the blades. The rumble strip (i'm sure there is a more formal name) probably results in a smoother shave for many people, but for me the result is simply a bloody head.



If Gillette every stops making these, I don't know what I will do. They do a fine job on my head and face and never leave me bloody.

I have had the original Sensor for almost 12 years now, and it still works the best of the ones i have tried. The Sensor 3 blades nick me up more, the Mach 3 again tends to nick me up more as well, and any of the store brand replacement heads for this Sensor just do not work out as well as the original sensor/sensor XL heads. The two blades seem to give me the closest shave without irritation, and after 12 years that alot of shaving. Don't waste money on more expensive newer models, if you have this one or can get this one, blades are cheaper and it does better.

I own the Gillette Atra (1977), Mach 3 (1998), Fusion (2006) and this razor - the Gillette SensorExcel (1990).



The Gillette Sensor Excel was rated highly rated in its heyday but with significant improvements in shaving technology today, the Gillette Sensor Excel just doesn't quite cut it anymore. The newer models of Gillette shavers, the Mach 3 and the Fusion, are vastly superior to the Sensor Excel.



- Price

The Replacement Cartridge for the Sensor Excel isn't cheap. Although it costs less than the Gillette Fusion Replacement Cartridge, it costs almost as much as the Mach 3 Replacement Cartridge! (Price comparisons based on the price per cartridge at the retail price as of this writing.)



- Comfort

For increased comfort, the Sensor Excel is designed with a pivoting head and flexible spring-loaded twin blades that conform to the contours of your face. However, the Sensor can also cause some *dis*comfort: The twin blades get dull rather quickly compared to the Mach 3 and the Fusion. It requires more strokes to shave an area than either the Mach 3 and the Fusion, and thus it is more likely to cause irritated skin or razor burn.



- Performance

With only twin blades, the Sensor Excel takes a longer time to complete a shave compared to a 3-, 4-, or 5-blade razor. Both Mach 3 and Fusion out-perform the Sensor Excel in shaving speed. (Mach 3 has 3 blades while Fusion has 5.)

Of all the razors, the Gillette Mach 3 clearly hits the sweet spot for performance, comfort, and price (affordability) -- i.e. it does a reasonably good job with minimal discomfort at a price that's not too exorbitant.

I purchased this shaver 2 years ago and it's not very good. I don't have that much experience with electric shavers, but this one does not produce a close shave. It also leaves my skin red and irritated. The charging station itself doesn't really work either. I have to keep cleaning the connectors and jostling around the shave to get it to charge in the station.

Three reasons it only gets 3 stars. 1: My foil wore out in 9 months, not the 18 months as promised. 2: My neck still seems a little rough. 3: The cost of the replacement cleaning units.



It shaves as good as any other electric razor I've had, but I have some disappointments. I have a somewhat-rough beard, but for the money I would have hoped for a longer life from the foil.

Well, I do like the braun 8985. It does a job. Picture if you were going real quick with your razor and you would have the quality of the braun. It isn't nearly as close as a razor, but it gets there. If you move to fast with it, you will have patches that are stubby.



My biggest advice is to follow the direction that it comes with. Shave BEFORE showering, I did not do this once, and it wasn't nearly as close of a shave. I am content with this, unfortunatly, i still have to use my norelco on my lip to get a close shave, even with a regular razor. But I am content with the Braun 8985 because if i don't feel like spending the 15 mins to use my razor, i can use the braun, and it works just about as good as a quick razor shave.



Anyways, overall it is a great product, but definitly does not deserve the credit that everyone is giving it. Follow the directions on shaving this thing, they say it takes about 3 weeks for your skin to get use to the shave.

We ordered a shaver and received it missing a few parts. The unit worked twice but the third time would not accept a charge. We contacted the seller who has been very evasive about this transaction. We since disputed the charge with AMEX and are waiting for their instructions. We had asked for his address to ship it back and he refused. This was a horrible transaction.
